Bruce Lee was Chu Shu-Hsien’s hero. After taking up long-distance running, the artist became fascinated by Lee’s prowess in martial arts and his ideas about neigong, the cultivation of internal energy. As he learned more about Lee, he stopped seeing him as a superman and began to identify with his human qualities: “He faced the same limits as the rest of us,” but overcame them with discipline, determination and grit. His Bruce Lee series (2013) imagines the martial artist’s response to mundane challenges: a power blackout; a tedious photo shoot. His video depicts Lee in the style of a 3D CGI game; stills gain mystery by being spliced into lenticular prints, in which different images, laid down in alternating strips, seem to morph into each other as the viewing angle shifts.
