Seeking new dimensions in ink painting, Hsiao Cho-Yu focused on water. Choosing highly absorbent paper, he saturates it with water and adds more water to selected areas as he works. In works like Liquid Creation (2015), his ink seems to come alive, moving as if with a mind of its own. The artist must control it—not just with a brush
but by vibrating, circling and angling the paper—while leaving it free to flow. “Things never turn out the way you plan,” he says. “To me, that’s the essence of life.”
