‘Ceramics is the total projection, magically shifted, that represents my social roles and the details of my everyday life.’

Born 1956, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Lives and works Tainan, Taiwan.

Lin Hsiu-Niang says that working with clay helped her to manage the many burdens and balance the social roles required of women. In the years that she juggled working in education with being a daughter, wife and mother she channeled her creative energies into mastering ceramic techniques. All her inspiration comes from daily life, rather than from Chinese porcelain traditions. although the delicate fluttery fine strips of clay that make up 2013-7 were inspired by the shapes, textures and patterns of ancient Chinese clothing.
