Bio

Born in a small town in Fujian Province in 1976, Wang Guangle was encouraged by his father to pursue his interest in art and attended the affiliated high school of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing at the age of 16, where he was taught by the painter Liu Xiaodong. Once enrolled in the famous First Studio of CAFA’s oil painting department, he rebelled against the emphasis on figurative painting. Even as a student he had begun to develop his interest in abstract qualities of space, colour and form, and soon after his graduation in 2000 he became recognised as a pioneering member of a new generation of conceptual painters. Wang was a founding member of the N12 artist group – 12 artists who had all studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and were unified by their shared desire to break away from traditions of representational painting. At first sight apparently formalist abstractions, Wang’s paintings are focused on the passage of time through his repeated actions, and the materiality of the medium. His work has been shown widely internationally, including solo shows in London, at Pace Gallery (2016); Beijing at Beijing Commune (2015); in New York, at Pace Gallery (2012 and 2014) and in Taipei at Soka Art Centre (2011). His work has been included in curated exhibitions at prominent institutions including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou; Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany; Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art Bozen/Bolzano, Bozen, Italy; The Orange County Museum of Art, California, U.S.A and Rubell Family Collection and Contemporary Arts Foundation, Miami, U.S.A. His works were included in Busan Biennale at Busan Cultural Center, Busan, Korea in 2010 and Prague Biennale 4 in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 2009. Wang Guangle currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
