b. 1963, Beijing. Lives and works in Beijing

With her photorealistic oil paintings, Wei Rong resists not just the trends of abstraction and technology but the tradition of the aristocratic nude. Her models are lower-class women, but in works like Poor Goddess (2013) she captures them in the poses of classic paintings—in this case La Source, by Ingres. Artist and Model (2014) is a candid image of herself chatting with a model as she gets dressed. Wei Rong’s technique does differ from that of the old masters, however: she first photographs her models, then projects the image onto her canvas, sketches the composition in pencil, covers the whole with a thin layer of acrylic, and applies the oil paint in multiple layers.
