I don’t think about themes or theories. My paintings are based on what I truly feel inside.

Born 1975, Tongjiang, Sichuan. Lives and works in Beijing

Listening to Beethoven or in a meditative trance, Yang Liming paints his inner space, which he likens to the space-time of quantum physics. We come from the void and return to it, he observes. The subtle tonal variations and rapid calligraphic strokes of huge abstract works like 2006 1 (2006) and 2014  2 (2014) depict the motions of life in that brief, resonant interval between the darkness of its origin and that of its end. “The best feeling,” the artist says, “is when the light is just right in the black night, and it feels as if I’m touching another space.”
