Say “Chinese art” and the first thing many people think of is ink painting. You Si reinvents this centuries-old tradition by using an eyedropper to deposit coloured acrylic ink on rice paper. His works seem to burst with life, but what kind of life is difficult to determine: the designs could be flowers, cells, amoebae, jungles, supernovas. As well as Transformation (2012), the titles include The Passage Between Space and Time, Evolving Garden, and Wave in Outer Space. He describes the paintings simply as “mental universes”.
