Born 1985, Shanghai

Zhang Lehua likes to work with marker pen so he avoids becoming too focused on form. He also likes to work in a loose, relaxed state where he makes his own rules—“the ones that make me laugh”. One of a series of mock propaganda posters, Leave Tomorrow’s Work for the Day after Tomorrow (2012) riffs on the slogan “Finish today’s work today,” which appears on school and factory walls all over China. Against that Communist commandment, the artist puts up the one he thinks holy people would give. His Buddha, Jesus and Mary all say “Go and play.”
